Mel Carnahan was born in Abilene, Texas in 1943. In 1968 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. In 1971 he was elected to the United States Senate and reelected in 1974. Shortly before his death in a plane crash in October 1996, he was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.
